Do allow the flow of the river suitable for canoeing to guide you in the right direction. As for finding gems yet to be discovered there might be a shortage of these. Do not place this region in the helter-skelter category for hastily assembled vacation packages as things do not work that way. It might come down to extending this vacation by one full week to find time to do all that you announce to see and do there. Popping into villages is more than a hit and miss coin toss. Select events for an itinerary or put together an itinerary with adequate specificities that will help you allocate time in terms of which attractions will be on the agenda. It is more than looking at the calendar and selecting the most appropriate month. Pleasant landscape eventualities await you if you play your cards right. Speak with people knowledgeable about the the terrain for hiking and canoeing. Bring certain intellectual proclivities relevant to the physical sciences and apply or utilize them. Geology and geography and the flow of water especially. Elements of the physical sciences play a role also here. This task is more than looking at the geography first. Would people reccomend one time over the other? (Weather, Crowds, Wild Flowers etc)Īlso, if there are any gems (villages, attractions, hiking routes, natural phenomena etc) along the way that people reccomend, please feel free to do so :) How busy is the Dordogne (river and towns/villages) in June? We have an availability mid-May and mid-June, and I'm trying to decide which would be best - I imagine the weather to be better in June, but am really keen to avoid the crowds, which will presumably be less in May. We'll pop into villages along the way too, to eat lunch, pick up supplies or visit sites of interest etc. ![]() I've earmarked Carennac, Souillac and Domme for B&B stopovers, and Gouffre de Padirac and Suillac as places to explore along the way. The rough plan is to start upstream of Carennac and spend a week making our way down to Beynac. I'm planning a canoe tour along the Dordogne for my Dad's 60th birthday with a mixture of camping and B&B. ![]()
